Interactions and statuses through the Marxist Lens
Through the Marxist lens, readers can analyze and interpret the rank and status of the characters throughout the book. I chose to decipher the novel, Beloved by Toni Morrison, through this lens because of the various characters and their statuses during the historical time period of slavery. The interactions between the slaves and their masters are intriguing to understand because of the different personalities of both the masters toward their slaves and the slaves toward their masters. The marxist lens not only brings out the social ranking of the whites to the blacks, but also the status’s between each person of a group. Within the masters, there are higher class businessmen who interact with agricultural farm owners but rarely interact with the slaves while the farm owners develop relationships with their slaves. The slaves can also attain different statuses within their relationships with their masters and other slaves. The marxist lens allows the reader to interpret the relationship between people and how their class and status affects their interactions and decisions. I am elated to be able to analyze Beloved through this lens because of the plethora of social class divisions and its immense impact on the plot.
